97’s Got Talent

written by Huggy Cortes

Last November 27, 2021, the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Batch 1997 held the ‘97’s Got (Mystery) Talent Show. Streamed online and attended by Batch ‘97 alumni from all over the world, the talent and game show featured our batchmates’ talents that had been unknown to most of us. The audience had to identify the batchmate  with only their newly revealed talent as a clue.

Talents showcased were Kariktan Pagarigan-Mingoa’s arnis skills, Carlo Colendrino’s finger boarding maneuvers, Bonifacio Padernal’s hand tricks, Gracia Gregana’s dexterity in solving minesweeper puzzles, Ethel Ravena Langkay’s cherry stem tongue-knotting skill, and Ron De Vera’s Vera's expertise in paper doily-making. Of course, no talent show would feel complete without musical and dance numbers, and our batchmates did not disappoint! Joshua Sabate played the guitar and sang “Make It With You,” Loys Ontog-Perez played “School Days” on the piano, Arabelle Casauay impressively sang a catchy toothpaste jingle without smiling, Kara-o-cker Eli Agabin stumped everyone in his rendition of GnR's "Bed of Roses," and Karen Savella-Hercia blew everyone away with her limber dance moves to the tune of "Hindi Ko Na Mapipigilan." While all the talents brought a smile to the audience’s faces, it was Karen's dance number that garnered the most votes and won her the "Crowd Favorite" award.

Karen, who works as a nurse at the Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital said that dancing relieves stress and provides her with the positive energy she needs in her work as a COVID Frontliner.

There were also winners for the talent guessing game part of the event. The winner with the most number of correct answers was Christopherson Landrito. Joy Cruz, our Homecoming Steering Committee chairperson, and Huggy Cortes were runners-up. Raffle winners were Marco Arciaga, Ron De Vera, Aisa Lecciones-Hermeno, Jereen Perez-Medina, Rica Guerrero-Villaruel, Ena Trinidad, Reiner Roldan, Leya Savellano-Rice, and Brian Llagas.

The talent show was hosted by Frances Josef-Hernandez with Marko Arciaga and Huggy Cortes as Commentitos (commentators).

To cap off the show, Chairperson Cruz reminded everyone of the Grand Alumni Homecoming on December 11, 2021 and the submission of entries for the commemorative marker due on December 10, 2021. The ALAB UPIS dri-fit shirt and cap were also launched during the event.
